I had not heard of Astpai before receiving a copy of their new album ‘True Capacity’ and after giving it several listens I was pleasantly surprised. Hailing from Wiener Neustadt, Austria featuring Zack on Vocals and guitar, Bernhard on bass, Marco on guitar and Toni on drums the band formed in 2001 and play melodic punk and hardcore. This is the band’s 6th studio album but after this display, I will definitely check out their back catalogue.

On ‘True Capacity’ the band have given us 10 infectious melodic punk tracks with some hardcore thrown in. If you like bands like The Menzingers and The Flatliners then I would recommend that you check this band out. The opening track ‘Rotten Bait’ starts off slowly but when the song kicks in it’s full of great riffs and will instantly get your foot stomping along. Next up is ‘The Lottery’, a melodic gem of a song with some killer riffs and brilliant vocals by Zock and is quite possibly my favourite track on the album. After a promising start, the band continues to deliver some great punk rock songs throughout the album with the likes of ‘Best Years’, ‘Falling Trees’,’True Capacity’, ‘Body Parts’ and the excellent ‘Feel Your Pain’ standing out.

Astpai have delivered us a great album and if you like your punk rock on the melodic side then you should give this a listen.
