This Means War! – S/T

Pirates Press Records
Written By Mark Jones

This Means War! are a new 5 piece punk from the Lowlands, Belgium, they were founded earlier this year by brothers Bert and Dries Van Dyck formerly of Convict. The line-up is completed by Robbie Jennekens, Hugo Geerlings, and Andre Lemmers and between they have plied their trade in various bands including Discipline, Hidden Guns, and Superhero so although this is a new band there is no shortage of experience here. Pirates Press were keen to sign these boys and this E.P is their debut release.

This Means War! might not be breaking boundaries in the punk scene but what they do they do they do extremely well and this is evident from the opener ‘Sailing Anarchy’, a melodic gem of a song with some great hooks and I’m already sold.  This good start is soon followed up by the excellent ‘These Were The Days’, again another great melodic song with a great chorus and some excellent vocals by Bert. Next up is ‘Keep The Home Fires Burning’, for me the stand out track on this release, an excellent song that you can’t help singing along to. ‘Defend What We Stand For’ kicks off with an excellent guitar riff before a cracking, well-written song which is played by musicians at the top of their game. This fine release come to an end with ‘Use It Up’, a harder sounding song to the previous songs but it’s still another belter of a song and a great end to the record.

This Means War! have released a fantastic debut release which I have had on repeat for the last few days and I’m sure it will be played to death for months to come. If I had one negative of this record it just leaves you wanting more, do yourselves a favour and grab a copy as you won’t be disappointed.
