Matilda’s Scoundrels are a 6 piece band from Hastings who mix traditional folk instruments such as the mandolin and accordion with the power and energy of punk and the results are nothing short of exceptional. The band formed in 2014 and are about release their debut album which is full of songs about drinking and the injustices that are going on in the world that we find ourselves in.
The thing I really like about ‘As The Tide Turns’ is the energy that the band gets across in the 10 songs on this album which your feet will automatically tap along to. ‘Burn it Down’, Take it To The Streets’ get things going and I’m already sold before ‘Shackles & Bones’, a brilliantly powerful song but for me, it’s the traditional instruments of mandolin and accordion are what shines the most. The album continues with ‘Bow To The Powers’,’Bottles of Rum’, ‘War On Drugs’ and the excellent ‘Friends of Mine’, for me the stand out track on this fine debut album.
‘As The Tide Turns’ is an excellent debut album and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future releases. If you’re a fan of bands like The Levellers, The Mahones or The Rumjacks then this is a must buy album.
