Since their formation in 2013 Grade 2 have been keeping themselves busy with some well received releases and several tours across Europe which gained them a decent following. This month the Isle of White band released ‘Break The Routine’,the follow up to last year’s ‘Mainstream View’ which features 11 brilliant slabs of streetpunk that are lyrically well written and the musicianship that for a band still in their early twenties is second to none.
Since receiving this album it’s been played to death and it just gets better and better after each listen, and having seen them at this years Rebellion festival they sound just as good live. After the introduction of ‘Devils Dancen Hours’ ‘Pubwatch’ kicks things off and boy what a start, a bass line to die for and some killer guitar on top of some brilliant lyrics and a singalong chorus. ‘Groundhog Day’ is next and continues the excellent start before ‘Hearts of Gold’ an absolute gem of a song that will get you sing and stomping along to in no time at all.
The album continues brilliantly with ‘Mr Industry’, ‘Money in the Game’ and ‘Turning the Tide’ before possibly my favourite track ‘Falling Bridges’, a future streetpunk classic in my opinion. The album speeds up with ‘Medina Snake’ and ‘Procrastinator’ before the final track ‘The Life and Tales(of Danny Ghoul, an absolute belter of a song and a fine ending to one of the albums of the year.
For a still relatively young band Grade 2 are just getting better and better with every release and are helping to keep the Oi!/streetpunk scene alive and kicking. I highly recommend that you get a copy of ‘Break The Routine’, you won’t be disappointed.
